Welcome to the Desperado
A touch of the South – in the far North
The Steakhouse Desperado has been part of Rügen – probably Germany’s most beautiful island – since 1999. Back then we started small, bringing our fruity, hearty Tex-Mex cuisine to the seaside resort of Sellin. Ever since, our guests at Wilhelmstraße 5a have enjoyed a touch of the South – up here in the far North.
To the sounds of Latin America we serve the finest Angus steaks, Mexican specialities such as chili con carne, fajitas, burritos and spare ribs, hand-mixed cocktails and tequila from our house brand to extra añejo. All in an atmosphere that has grown over 25 years: the hand-painted sun ceiling, the Aztec-carved bar, the guitar on the orange wall. Not a concept restaurant, but a place with soul – and a curse, but more on that later.

In the heart of Sellin, near the pier
The Desperado is on Wilhelmstraße, the famous promenade of the seaside resort of Sellin, which runs between grand villas straight down to the pier. From the beach or the pier you reach us in a few minutes on foot, and the Rasender Roland steam railway station is close by as well.
After a day on the beach, at the end of a cliff-top hike or as a trip from Binz, Baabe, Göhren or the Mönchgut peninsula: in the evening you’ll find a proper steak, Mexican food and cocktails here – no reservation, no formality.

An incredible story
The shaman and the curse
A few years ago a real Mexican wandered into our restaurant – a shaman, as it turned out during the evening. He stayed late into the night, praised the decoration, and at some point the owner told him her woes: ashtrays, tablecloths and flower pots keep disappearing, even the snake’s head in the terrace wall has been broken out several times.
The shaman stood up, walked silently into every corner of the restaurant, paused, murmured something – and when paying, with a sly smile, announced that he had put a curse on every object in the house: whoever steals here will lose their luck.
“Now, I am a modern, enlightened person and don’t believe in hocus-pocus. But since the second person stood before me, remorseful, and returned a stolen item, I am beginning to doubt my attitude.”

Do I need to book a table?
No – no reservation is needed. Just come by from 4 pm, Wilhelmstraße 5a, and pick a table inside or on the terrace. For larger groups and celebrations please give us a quick call: 038303 85185.
What are the opening hours?
We are open daily from 4:00 pm, all year round – off-season too. Hot food is served until at least 10 pm. Short-notice changes (e.g. on public holidays) are posted on Instagram.
Where can I park in Sellin?
There is metered parking right on Wilhelmstraße. Free parking is available at the cemetery car park (Kirchstraße), just a few minutes’ walk away. See our sketch map.
How far is it to the Sellin pier?
About 700 metres – Wilhelmstraße leads straight to the famous pier. An 8–10 minute stroll along the promenade with its seaside-resort villas.
Are dogs welcome?
Yes, dogs are very welcome – the covered terrace is perfect for a relaxed evening with your dog.
Are there vegetarian dishes?
Yes. The menu includes Chili sin Carne with lentils, quesadilla rolls with homemade bean purée, Burrito Vegetario, Papa Vegetario and meat-free fajitas. Use the vegetarian filter on our online menu.
Where does the steak meat come from?
Exclusively Angus beef from Argentina, Uruguay or Paraguay – stress-free, free-range cattle from the South American pampas. Our ribs are pork, and we also serve chicken and, as a speciality, Australian kangaroo.
How spicy is the food?
Most dishes are mild to well-seasoned. Really hot dishes are marked with a chilli on the menu. If you want more fire, ask for chilli salsa or jalapeño sauce.
Is there an allergen list?
Yes, a complete allergen and additive list is available in the restaurant – just ask our team.
Can I order takeaway?
Yes – every dish is available to take away. Pre-order by phone or via our online ordering system and pick it up at your preferred time.
Do you sell gift vouchers?
Yes. The nicely packaged Desperado gift card is available at the restaurant, and you can buy and print an online voucher here.
Is the Desperado suitable for families and groups?
Absolutely. Families with children are as welcome as birthday parties, clubs or company events. For groups of around 10 or more, a quick call helps us put tables together.

Take the B 196 to Sellin, then head for the centre/pier. Wilhelmstraße is the promenade leading to the pier – we are at number 5a, under the big trees.
Metered parking directly on Wilhelmstraße. Free of charge: the cemetery car park (Kirchstraße), a few minutes’ walk away.
From Sellin Ost station it is about a 10-minute walk via Ostbahnstraße to Wilhelmstraße. VVR buses stop at Sellin centre.
Simply walk up Wilhelmstraße away from the sea – after about 700 metres you are there.
